Fault guide
Ice Machine Producing Small or Hollow Ice
Undersized, hollow or misshapen cubes point to the water side of the machine or a shortened freeze cycle rather than a total failure.
Possible causes
- Low water level in the sump
- Partially blocked water distributor
- Scaled evaporator plate
- Freeze cycle terminating early
- Low incoming water pressure
Safe basic checks you can make
- Check incoming water pressure and filter condition
- Look for visible scale on the evaporator
- Confirm no distributor holes are blocked
Safety: Never attempt live electrical testing, refrigerant work, compressor replacement or major dismantling. Those tasks require a qualified refrigeration technician.
When professional diagnosis is required
- Cube size does not recover after cleaning
- Cycle timing needs adjustment
- Suspected sensor or control fault
Preventing it in future
- Descale on schedule
- Replace filters at the recommended interval
- Address hard water with correct treatment
Common questions
Can I keep using the machine with this fault?
Where the fault involves water on the floor, electrical tripping or contaminated ice, take the machine out of service. For reduced production you can usually keep operating while a repair is booked, but output will keep declining until the cause is corrected.
How quickly can this be repaired?
Cleaning, water-side and control faults are frequently resolved on the first visit. Refrigeration and component replacements depend on parts availability, and we will confirm a realistic timeline before starting.
Will a service prevent this happening again?
In most cases yes. Scheduled descaling, condenser cleaning and filter replacement prevent the majority of the faults we attend.
