A commercial ice machine only has three jobs: get clean water into the sump, freeze it onto the evaporator, and release it into the bin. Nearly every 'no ice' call we attend is a failure in one of those three stages, and identifying which stage has failed takes about two minutes on site.
Stage one: water is not arriving
Open the front panel and watch a fill cycle. If the sump stays dry, the problem is upstream: an isolated supply, a blocked filter, a failed inlet valve or a stuck float. This is the most common cause in areas with hard borehole water, because filters clog faster than the replacement schedule assumes.
Stage two: water arrives but never freezes
If water circulates but no ice forms on the evaporator, you are looking at a refrigeration or heat rejection problem. Start with the condenser and its fan: a coil packed with kitchen grease and dust cannot reject heat, so head pressure rises and the freeze cycle never completes. If the coil is clean and the fan runs, the fault is inside the sealed system and needs a qualified technician.
Stage three: ice forms but never harvests
Ice bridging across the evaporator plate means the harvest cycle is not completing — commonly a hot gas valve, a harvest sensor, or a bin level control that thinks the bin is full. Machines in this state often look frozen solid and are frequently misdiagnosed as 'broken compressor'.
What you can safely check
Confirm the water supply is open, the bin is not full, the condenser is clean and the room is not overheating. Do not open electrical enclosures, test live circuits or attempt refrigerant work — those require a qualified refrigeration technician.
